Sony A7riii Unable to Read Memory Card
Sony A7 : Unable to read retention card. Reinsert Memory card.
Hi,
Everytime I turn on my sony A7 I become this fault : "Unable to read retentiveness bill of fare. Reinsert Retentiveness carte du jour."
Information technology blocks the screen so I tin can't do anything.
I tried switching SD card, I even bought a new one nada works.
These card all works on other photographic camera and estimator.
I would go to sony store so they could take a look at it.
The problem is I am travelling through brazil for the next calendar month and my goal was to take picture here.
Plus the simply store they say they could have a expect at information technology is in a complete some other city that. I can't accomplish at present.
It's obvious the problem comes from the photographic camera. Is at that place a style that I can fix that past myself?
Does anyone have an thought of what I could do ?

You might wish to format your card with SDFormatter. So insert your carte in the camera w/o formatting it again into it. The camera should inquire you lot to create an image databas file. If so, press Enter and shoot commonly. Might piece of work... or not. BTW i format all my cards this fashion personally. FWIW.
Best,

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read memory card. Reinsert Retentiveness bill of fare.
I'm a Nikon and a Sony user. I've never ever ever ever ever had an issue with any brand of SD cards in my Nikon Cameras. I've got this mistake in one case or twice on my Sony A7II merely it magically went away after a few "turn information technology off and back on over again" attempts. Only I also started to get this fault on my sony RX100III with more one SD card and two dissimilar brands of SD card.
I absolutely refuse to believe its a carte du jour effect! I believe its a Sony software issue. (I cant back that belief up with any proof just Information technology wont alter my opinion)
Formatting Sony cards in photographic camera takes a heck of a lot longer than formatting a carte in a Nikon camera. The Sony system appears to create a database and file directory structure on each SD card which is kinda crap and sucks large time and makes no sense. I dont want an image catalog/database on my SD card with a complicated directory structure god damn information technology just write my raw image files to the feckin memory card with at to the lowest degree fuss every bit possible. I think what happens is this itemize/database per bill of fare is very easily corrupted making accessing the images or reading the card difficult when things go wrong.
The worst thing about seeing this error is that y'all cannot cancel out of the error to permit y'all go dorsum to the bill of fare and attempt to reformat the bill of fare (which solves the consequence sometimes) Information technology means if your out in the field and taking photos with only the one carte in the camera and the fault decides to rear its ugly caput your screwed...and game over human being! If the Sony menu would only permit you to cancel the error and give yous the selection to reformat in-camera information technology would be swell and although you lot would loose images already taken it would not stop you dead in your tracks.

I merely had this problem the other week, not tried the photographic camera since (A7 2) but had seemed to articulate after a while.
Searching today I plant this:

A total judge by me, this fault message looks to exist standard across the Sony photographic camera range, not just the A series - I'm going to effort and 'clean the slot'...
Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read retentiveness card. Reinsert Retentivity card.
FWIW;
Using the Lexar Pro 1000x SD U3 II Class 10 carte du jour. Have used the in Nikon camera's for long time with no problem. Recently bought Sony a7III and have had the same "Unable to read ..." problem. First time, I formatted on Mac; Disk Utilities; Erased; Mac OS Extended (Journaled), placed card back in Sony camera and was able to reformat. Second time this didn't piece of work. I placed the carte in slot two, reformatted the card and was able to use the card in slot one again. Sony, please correct the problem, very apparent that it is non a problem with the cards. Side note, used these same card in Sony A7S MII with no issues what and so e'er.

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read memory carte du jour. Reinsert Retentivity menu.
This error has started to touch on my Sony a 7R3. I began to use Lexar 128 GB professional grand X cards and suddenly began to feel slot I errors. The camera freezes with an error message that it cannot recognize the carte du jour in slot 1 and it should be reinserted. After several re-insertion attempts and turning the camera on and off the behavior is non improved. The camera remains locked out in slot 1 remains inaccessible. The error message ties up the computer rear screen display and card system such that there is no option to format the card and try again.
These errors too occurred with Sony cards and with Lexar 64 GB cards. The error occurred at random times and would totally necktie up my camera on a photo shoot. Fortunately I was able to save a JPEG version onto slot II . At that place is been no malfunction on the slot 2 cards. The camera no longer recognizes when a UHS I card is inserted in slot 1. Information technology does recognize on occasion the insertion of a UHS Two menu.
The occurrence of this error is completely unrelated to whatsoever formatting of the card as I take both been able to insert UHS 2 cards and correctly format them in photographic camera and introduced cards formatted by another camera. Nevertheless, UHS I cards are non recognized fifty-fifty if formatted correctly on an SD foundation formatting program equipped Windows computer.
Afterwards the mistake occurs, the image information is not lost on the menu but can exist retrieved by a unproblematic menu reader plugged into a laptop.
The error is very frustrating and I suspect may represent an error in the camera firmware. On visual inspection of the slot, there is no aberration of the Pins, retaining clip, or other configuration items. There is no dirt, foreign body, or any other irregularity of the cards.
Have you found a solution to this event. It's random occurrence occurs at the worst possible times and cannot simply be cleared by the camera memory menu choices
Thanks

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read memory carte. Reinsert Retentiveness menu.
I also get this mistake occasionally previously on my A7 and just recently on my A9. The images are never lost as they can be read from the PC, but it magically only works over again past taking information technology out, plugging it in, turning the camera on/off multiple times. I think I even accident in the slot and make certain the contacts are cleans similar the old NES cartridge days but not sure if that really helps.
Never have lost photos, merely it is a major annoyance occasionally.

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read memory card. Reinsert Memory card.
I would love if someone had a solution to this error. Information technology's been getting worse and worse on my a7. Information technology takes a lot of turning the camera on and off, reinserting the card, etc... before it works. It's always a 50/l shot when I start it upwards that I am going to get the error. in one case it's clear the photographic camera works fine. Just really annoying to have to spend 5-x minutes messing with it when I need to use information technology

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read retentivity carte. Reinsert Memory menu.
There is a batch of SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro UHS I 64 and 128 cards that accept a compatibility issue with Sony a9, a7iii and a7rIII cameras in slot i. If you put the carte in slot 2 it will probably work.
Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read retentivity card. Reinsert Memory bill of fare.
I started having the issue on my a7iii when upgrading from 64GB SanDisk Farthermost Pro to the 128GB of the same card type. Almost returned the cards until I came across the above suggestion to switch priority to slot 2.
It works! Switching "Prioritize Rec. Media" to Slot 2 fixed this issue for me.
These are the steps I took
i. Quick Format both cards on a pc
two. Insert your 1st carte du jour into slot ii on your sony camera
iii. Get to the Card > Setup half dozen/7 > Rec. Media Settings > Prioritize Rec. Media > and change it to Slot 2.
4. The card volition get updated with database, filesystem, etc
5. Remove that card from slot ii and put it in slot one.
6. Put your 2nd card in slot two
7. It gets updated, etc etc.
eight. Both cards should now be setup the same and working
That's it. you might not need all those steps to become it to work, but simply wanted to share what worked for me.
Hope this helps someone else out there.
Cheers

Elementary solution: Update to firmware version 2.10 and too read the small-scale text about this upgrade.
This is a different issue from the A7 that the OP is describing, which probably is caused by a faulty photographic camera.

Re: Sony A7 : Unable to read retention card. Reinsert Memory card.
I just got my A7iii final night. I put a make new Sandisk Extreme 128mb SD menu in slot 1 and automatically received the aforementioned error you speak of. After reviewing the Sony community I tried a trick that so far is working.
1. Seitch the primary slot to slot two nether Setup-> Rec. Media Settings -> Prioritize Rec. Media.
two. Format SD card in slot 2.
three. You lot can then switch back to slot 1 equally principal or shoot using slot 2 equally primary.
I did this and the SD card seems to be working now with no issues....and so far.
